Advanced Materials

BES Materials Sciences and Engineering Program

The ORNL materials sciences and engineering program supported by the Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences’ (BES) Materials Sciences and Engineering Division (MSED) focuses on four scientific themes: complex materials and materials discovery; mechanical properties and materials under extreme conditions; energy storage and energy conversion; and nano- and meso-scale materials and properties. Underpinning these four themes are four core capabilities, which are contributing to the success of the scientific themes while at the same time being advanced by focused efforts to maintain scientific leadership within these areas: imaging at multiple length scales (transmission electron and scanning probe microscopies, atom-probe tomography); neutron and x-ray scattering; theory and modeling; and controlled synthesis.
