Clean Energy

Supporting Organizations

A researcher weighs filters containing conventional diesel soot in a humidity-controlled chamber. The mass of the soot will be compared to samples of particulate matter collected from the emissions from a high-efficiency clean combustion engine.

Championed internally by the lab’s Energy and Environmental Sciences Directorate, ORNL’s Clean Energy initiatives are helping ensure America’s energy independence, economic vitality, and environmental sustainability. Cross-disciplinary in design, EESD is organized into several divisions and programs. Divisions are discipline-focused organizations that provide the resources – staff, facilities, and supporting management – needed to accomplish research and development. Programs are mission-focused organizations that coordinate multidisciplinary projects, drawing resources from across Laboratory divisions.
