ORNL’s Energy and Transportation Science Division develops and deploys technology that enables America to achieve energy independence, energy security, global economic leadership, and environmental sustainability. Encompassing multiple scientific research areas and facilities, ETSD research and development spans a wide variety of research missions broadly described in the areas of building technologies, sustainable industry and manufacturing; fuels, engines, and emissions, transportation analysis, and vehicle systems integration.
ORNL’s Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) is focused on helping develop new building technologies, whole-building and community integration, improved energy management in buildings and industrial facilities during their operational phase, and market transformations in all of these areas. The Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center (FEERC) at ORNL is helping identify ways to increase automotive efficiency and reduce emissions by performing research on engines and other automotive components, basic chemistry, materials, and fuels. Fuel properties, engine performance, and emissions are studied with fuels from conventional and unconventional fossil-based sources and nonpetroleum fuels from synthetic and renewable sources such as ethanol and biodiesel. The Center for Sustainable Industry and Manufacturing (CSIM) reduces industrial energy use and improve industrial competitiveness through world-class leadership in materials, processing, devices, and implementation strategies. Core research focuses in this area include advanced materials, battery manufacturing, robotics and automation, nanomanufacturing, separations technologies, and combined heat and power. More
ORNL’s Center for Transportation Analysis (CTA) creates predictive information, analytical methods, and vehicle systems data that impact national policy and consumer decisions to shape vehicle and transportation architectures for a safe, sustainable mobility future. More
ETSD also houses the Sustainable Transportation Program Office and Building Technologies Program Office, which administratively facilitate the integration of ORNL research across disciplines to support federally and privately funded research. Staff expertise, state-of-the-art facilities, and supporting management of a variety of specialized centers enable the division’s research efforts, while the program offices within the division administratively coordinate multidisciplinary projects, drawing resources from divisions across ORNL.
