ORNL is a recognized, international leader in nuclear data research and development (R&D) to support nuclear applications analyses. For more than 40 years, ORNL has provided neutron resonance region nuclear data evaluations to the US Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B) database, and many of the key ORNL resonance evaluations have also been adopted by international nuclear databases in Europe, Japan, China, and Russia. ORNL has leadership roles and responsibilities in key international expert nuclear data working groups that perform work under the auspices of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) / Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Furthermore, ORNL has the lead responsibility for chairing the ENDF/B Formats Committee, which is the standard nuclear database format used by all of the international databases.
At ORNL, nuclear data R&D is tightly integrated with nuclear fuel-cycle analyses and radiation-transport methods development efforts, thereby providing a unique and powerful capability that couples basic science differential data development with nuclear applications research and development. The ORNL nuclear data program consists of four complementary areas of research: 1) differential cross-section measurements; 2) nuclear data analysis methods development; 3) cross-section evaluation development; and 4) cross-section processing methods development to provide nuclear data libraries for radiation transport analyses. As a result, all phases of the nuclear data research and development are performed in concert with nuclear science and technology needs and requirements.
