Nuclear Science

University Engagement

The Educational Outreach Program of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED) at ORNL is the principle conduit for sustaining and growing the opportunities to attract, recruit, and retain talent in support of the nuclear science and technology programs at ORNL. This goal is accomplished via internship opportunities, hosting university faculty, invited lectures from universities, NSED staff participation with university career fairs, student American Nuclear Society Conferences, and guest speakers at the universities.

In addition to the various internship programs offered by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, NSED offers a unique internship – The Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS). The NESLS program is a cooperative research initiative geared toward students working in physics and nuclear engineering applications. This is a competitive program in which a judged poster competition is conducted at the end of the summer internship.

Universities from all over the United States have participated with ORNL via the NSED Educational Outreach Program.
