Giving spirit strong in 2003 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 23, 2003 — Employees at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are winding down another year marked by volunteerism in the community and generosity toward the less fortunate.

Laboratory staff members again topped this year's United Way campaign goal, raising more than $800,000. UT-Battelle, the laboratory's managing contractor, contributed another $75,000 to the charity. These funds are distributed among area United Way organizations.

Team UT-Battelle, an employee organization supported by the ORNL contractor, saw its volunteer hours grow in 2003. Team UT-Battelle groups raised more than $50,000 for a number of causes that included the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the March of Dimes and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Team UT-Battelle was the largest corporate participant in the latter event.

Assistance to Morgan County residents displaced by the November 2002 tornado outbreak continued. ORNL volunteers, including members of the Atomic Trades and Labor Council, contributed hundreds of hours of labor toward a Habitat for Humanity house for a family of six whose home was destroyed in the storms. The ATLC received the Tennessee Center for Labor-Management Relations' Horizon Award for its efforts with the project.

UT-Battelle's contributions benefited numerous local organizations including the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, the Arts Council of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge Playhouse. Education grants included support for the Southern Appalachian Engineering and Science Fair and Oak Ridge High School Science Olympiad team. The University of Tennessee Academy of Math and Science received more than $150,000.

UT-Battelle continued its legacy support of area high school science laboratories with gifts to schools that included Clinton, Maryville and Oak Ridge high schools. Overall, science and math education contributions in FY2003 exceeded $350,000.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is managed for the Department of Energy by UT-Battelle.
