The Joint Institute of ORNL and the University of Tennessee has a single mission: to enable joint faculty appointees, senior staff scientists, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and UT research associates to perform world-class research in systems biology and biotechnology, taking advantage of ORNL's user facilities and other world-class tools. The research will lead to the founding of new companies, spurring economic development in the region.
Funded in whole by the state of Tennessee, the joint institute is located close to ORNL's Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics, other biomolecular sciences research laboratories, and the Environmental Sciences Division buildings. The three story building provides offices, conference rooms, classrooms, interaction space, and molecular biology and biochemistry labs. The facility is the home for the ORNL-UT Graduate School of Genome Science and Technology.
