Chemistry


Researchers at ORNL conduct fundamental and applied research using experimental, theoretical and computational approaches in support of DOE’s science, energy, national security, and environmental missions.  One of ORNL’s major research themes focuses on obtaining a molecular-level understanding of the chemical transformations and physical phenomena, especially at interfaces, which is important for applications in separations, catalysis, electrical energy storage, geochemistry, corrosion, and carbon capture. Knowledge gained from fundamental chemical research is applied toward applications such as emissions control, fuel reprocessing, superconductivity, energy storage, and isotope separations.  ORNL has broad capabilities in separation science, geoscience, and analytical chemistry including chemical imaging and mass spectrometry for proteomics and nuclear forensics as well as access to some of the most unique tools and user facilities in the world, such as the Spallation Neutron Source, High Flux Isotope Reactor, and the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences.
