Coxon will be responsible for developing new programs that provide new and expanded revenue for ORNL and for managing key services dealing with intellectual property and partnerships. Included in this new organization will be the offices of Technology Transfer, Science and Technology Partnerships, and Work for Others. The organization also includes the deputy director of the National Security Program Office, the program development section in the Office Planning and Special Projects Office, and the ORNL co-director of the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology.
Coxon, who will report to Trivelpiece, brings 30 years of relevant business, technical and management experience to the position. He has been with Lockheed Martin Energy Systems (LMES) since December 1996 after a 28-year career with Bechtel companies. He will begin his new assignment Aug. 3.
In making the announcement, Trivelpiece noted that the new position "was established as a result of our re-engineering efforts."
In his most recent position as vice president and chief information officer for LMES, Coxon was responsible for more than $300 million per year in shared services bought and sold among the Department of Energy's prime contractors on the Oak Ridge Reservation. He also was responsible for developing and putting into motion the company's information systems strategy.
Coxon graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in civil engineering and attended the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He is a registered professional engineer in several states and a fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers. Coxon is chairman-elect of the East Tennessee Economic Council and is active on a number of other boards, including those of Roane State Community College, Methodist Medical Center, SunTrust Bank of Anderson County, Oak Ridge Arts Council and the American Museum of Science and Energy.
Coxon and his wife, Janet, live in Oak Ridge. They have a son, Steve, 21, who is a senior at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., and a daughter, Annie, 18, who will be attending Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., in August.
LMER manages ORNL, a multiprogram research facility, for DOE. LMES manages the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant for DOE.
