Hayden is manager of the Engineering Materials Section and Metals Processing Laboratory User Center at ORNL.
This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in transferring research results or findings in some aspect of the fields of metallurgy and materials into commercial production and practical use as a representative of an industrial, academic, governmental or technical organization.
The formal presentation will be made at the 128th TMS Annual Meeting in San Diego.
The mission of TMS is to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials.
In addition to the TMS award, Hayden has had many professional accomplishments. He worked on the development of copper-cored composite material for U.S. coinage, developed numerous ORNL cooperative R&D programs with materials producing and using industries and has extensive numbers of U.S. and foreign patents in materials technology.
He was the 1993 Inventors Clubs of America Inventor of the Year and received the 1996 ORNL President's Award for Continuous Improvement. A member of Sigma Xi and Tau Kappa Alpha, Hayden received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from MIT.
He and his wife, Kathy, live in Oak Ridge. They have one adult child.
