Mulholland, a senior research staff member in the Ecological Studies Section of ORNL's Environmental Sciences Division, coauthored the chapter in the document "Impacts, Adaptations and Mitigation of Climate Change: Scientific-Technical Analysis." This is the official review and assessment of potential environmental and socioeconomic effects of climate change of the United Nations Environmental Programme.
Along with his co-authors, Drs. Nigel Arnell of the United Kingdom, Bryson Bates of Australia, Herbert Lang of Switzerland and John Magnuson of the United States, Mulholland analyzed the potential effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems throughout the world, including the physical, chemical and biological properties.
Mulholland has studied aquatic ecosystems since 1979 when he joined ORNL. He has published more than 70 papers and reports on the subject.
He graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering. He earned a master's degree in environmental engineering from Cornell and a doctorate in environmental biology from the University of North Carolina.
Mulholland and his wife, Cathey Daniels, live in Oak Ridge with their three children.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
