Southworth, a group leader and senior development staff member at the Center for Transportation Analysis of ORNL's Energy Division, will serve two-year appointments on the board of directors for the Mathematical and Quantitative Methods Specialty Group and the Energy and Environment Specialty Group of the AAG.
The former specialty group works to promote the development and use of rigorous mathematical and statistical methods in all geography subfields, and the latter works to advance the geographical study of energy and environmental themes, to provide a forum for communication among those with similar interests and to encourage education and research.
In his new capacities, Southworth will review papers submitted to the annual specialty group competition and help to organize annual meeting sessions. He has been a member of the AAG for 13 years.
Prior to joining ORNL in 1983, Southworth was a research officer at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds in England and an assistant professor in civil engineering at the University of Illinois. Southworth received a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in geography at the University of Leeds in 1972 and 1977, respectively.
He and his wife Marilyn live with their daughter Katie in Oak Ridge.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
