ORNL researcher honored for worldwide scientific achievements

Dr. Frank Plasil, a senior research staff member and section leader of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is the recipient of the E. Mach Honorary Medal for Merit in the Physical Sciences awarded by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Plasil receives the medal, the academy's highest honor, in recognition of his scientific achievements which have been recognized worldwide.

He will be presented with the medal Sept. 3 at a ceremony in Prague.

Plasil joined ORNL in 1967. He is currently responsible for all experimental nuclear physics in ORNL's Physics Division. He received his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in nuclear chemistry.

Plasil is a fellow of the American Physical Society. He received the Senior Alexander von Humboldt Award in Germany in 1984 and also received the Martin Marietta Publications Award for two consecutive years.

Plasil and his wife, Carol, live in Oak Ridge. They have four adult children.
