ORNL Researchers elected to American Nuclear Society positions

Wayne Houlberg and Stan Milora of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have been elected to positions with the American Nuclear Society (ANS), Fusion Energy Division.

The objective of the Fusion Energy Division of ANS is to support the development and understanding of fusion energy, including fundamental scientific and engineering aspects. This effort includes the dissemination of knowledge and information about fusion energy, encouragement of closer professional relations among members and cooperation with other scientific and professional groups striving for similar objectives.

Houlberg, of the Fusion Energy Division senior research staff at ORNL, was elected chairman of the executive committee of ANS. His duties include coordinating the objectives of ANS and serving as an ex-officio member of the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee, a group that serves at the discretion of Dr. Martha Krebs, the DOE Director of Energy Research, to provide guidance on directions for the fusion program under the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences.

He received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin. Houlberg and his wife, Linda, live in Oak Ridge, where he is active with the Oak Ridge Community Playhouse. They have three adult children, Brett, Michele and Kara.

Milora, section head of the technology section of the Fusion Energy Division at ORNL, was elected to serve on the executive committee of ANS. The committee works to implement the goals of ANS. He received his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University and received both his master's and doctorate degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Milora and his wife, Mary, live in Oak Ridge. They have two adult children, James and Lynn.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
