Sale named AWRA fellow

Dr. Michael Sale of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been selected as a fellow of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA).

This recognition is given to long-term AWRA members who have served in leadership positions in the organization and have records of outstanding accomplishment and contributions in water resources science or technology.

Sale has 18 years of experience in the ORNL Environmental Sciences Division, with past responsibilities as leader of Hydrosystems and Ecological Risk groups and program manager for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission projects. He is a research staff member in the division.

He received a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Sale received a master's degree in aquatic ecology and holds a doctorate in environmental engineering and science from the University of Illinois. He received a Lockheed Martin Significant Event Award for his work on the Lower Mokelumne River Project environmental impact statement in 1993.

He is a member of the American Fisheries Association, the American Water Resources Association and the American Geophysical Union. Sale is the chairman of the Farragut Advisory Council on the Environment.

He is coach and division coordinator for the American Youth Soccer Organization and is a coach for Odyssey of the Mind at Farragut Intermediate School.

Sale and his wife, Janet Heidel, live in Farragut. They have three children, Ryan, Danny and Chris.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
