The
Macromolecular Structures Group
is the home of the Center for Structural Molecular Biology,
a resource for the Department of Energy (DOE) and the biological
community. It is intended to bring together existing
strengths at ORNL in neutron sciences, mass spectrometry,
and computational biology, and make them available to the
broad biological user community. The focal point of
the CSMB is the construction and operation of a small angle
neutron scattering (SANS) instrument at the High Field Isotope
Reactor (HFIR), which is currently being upgraded to yield
the highest flux of cold neutrons in this country. The
SANS instrument will be specially designed for biological
studies and will be located within a newly constructed experimental
hall, along with biological sample preparation facilities.
The CSMB will support biological research at academic, industrial,
and government laboratories and would work closely with researchers
in the Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics
at ORNL and other OBER-supported programs.
