Carbon Materials Technology

The Carbon Materials Technology Group advances the science and technology base for manufacturing of carbon materials and composites by conducting innovative research and development for a broad spectrum of programs and applications, such as nuclear, aerospace, defense, automotive, and infrastructure.

Research Activities

  • Graphite research related to the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program, Nuclear Energy Office, for both Advanced Gas cooled Reactor (AGR) and Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) Technologies
  • Materials for the Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Program, including Carbon Bonded Carbon Fiber (CBCF) and Iridium blank and foil
  • Development of novel precursors and processing of carbon fibers, graphite foams and other novel carbon forms
  • Porous carbon materials for gas storage and separation, including adsorbent for methane storage and adsorbent for building air quality applications
