Developing affordable clean energy solutions for transportation applications

The Power Electronics and Electric Machinery (PEEM) group provides science and technology innovations in power electronics, electric machinery, and extreme fast wired/wireless power transfer from concept to implementation through transformational broad-based research that impacts affordable clean energy solutions for transportation applications from passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles. The group has unique capabilities in power semiconductor characterization, modeling, and packaging, novel electric motor modeling tools, and wireless charging technologies. The Power Electronics and Electric Machinery Research Laboratories are located at the National Transportation Research Center, which is designated as a DOE User Facility. The designation encourages collaborative efforts between the PEEM group, industry, and academia. The most advanced analysis, simulation, and design software is available to the PEEM staff to implement state-of-the art circuit and motor designs. PEEMRC provides a broad-based capability and an extensive list of equipment to build and evaluate power conversion circuit prototypes in-house starting from bare die and evaluating them. On the motors side, PEEMRC does research on electromagnetic characterization of motor materials, modeling and design, in-house prototyping and evaluation. These capabilities are provided at the user's expense. There are many ways to work with PEEM, including a cooperative research and development agreement, a work for others agreement, or a user agreement. Each agreement is developed based on a user's desire to protect research results or inventions.
