Barnthouse and Poutsma will receive the awards at the organization's annual meeting in Atlanta in February. They are being cited for their "efforts toward advancing science or fostering applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished."
Barnthouse joined ORNL in 1976 as a research associate. Currently, he is a senior research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division and leader of its environmental risk group. He received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Kenyon College in Ohio, and was awarded a doctoral degree in biology from the University of Chicago.
Barnthouse previously was a member of the National Research Council's Committee on Risk Assessment Methodologies. In addition to AAAS, he is also a member of the Ecological Society of America, the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and the Society for Risk Analysis. He also serves as the risk/hazard assessment editor for the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
He has written numerous publications on ecological risk assessment and was named Martin Marietta Energy Systems Author of the Year for 1991.
Barnthouse lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, Raven. They have two children.
Poutsma joined ORNL in 1978 from Union Carbide's former Corporate Research Laboratory in New York and has served as program leader of the fossil fuels chemistry group, head of the organic chemistry and chemical physics section, director of the former Chemistry Division and, most recently, as the director of the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division since 1994.
He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics from Calvin College in Michigan, and was awarded a doctoral degree in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois.
Poutsma is a member of the AAAS and American Chemical Society. He is a member of the Government Relations Committee of the Council for Chemical Research and of the editorial board of the journal Energy and Fuels. He has written numerous publications and managed chapters in the areas of physical organic chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis.
He and his wife, Yolanda, live in Oak Ridge. They have two children.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
