Barry Berven, associate director of the Life Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been named acting director of the Joint Institute for Biological Sciences - a collaboration between ORNL and the University of Tennessee.

The joint institute's mission is to promote and develop support for collaborative education and research in biological sciences between the two organizations, including the UT Medical Complex, UT College of Veterinary Medicine and the UT Institute of Agriculture.

Berven attended Colorado State University, earning a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry, a master's degree in health physics and a doctorate in radiation biology. He and his wife, Brenda, reside in Oak Ridge. They have four children.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
