The honor recognizes the contributions Forsberg has made to the advancement of nuclear science and technology. He was cited for original research and inventions on passive safety systems for light-water and high temperature, gas-cooled reactors and on advanced waste management systems based on geochemical and thermodynamic barriers to prevent the release of radionuclides to the environment.
Forsberg has nine U.S. patents, two pending patents and more than 130 publications. He is a member of two government panels, testifies before government agencies and commissions, and is a frequent lecturer at universities.
Prior to joining ORNL, Forsberg was employed with the Bechtel Corp. He earned a bachelor's and master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He and his wife, Virginia, reside in Oak Ridge and have two sons.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
