ISED Car Show raises funds for YO-STEM

ISED’s Nov. 3 car show drove donations of nearly $3,000 for YO-STEM, a nonprofit founded by ORNL employee Candice Halbert to provide STEM opportunities for school-age children who might not otherwise have them.

The event on the quad, which included a silent auction and food trucks donating a percentage of their earnings, let past and present ORNL employees and their families showcase their vehicles. Admirers “voted” for their favorites by making a donation in that vehicle’s name.

Thirty-eight vehicles participated in the show, which included a section specifically for electric vehicles. Winners were:

First place: James Avenell, 1934 Ford Coupe, with $122 raised.

Second place: Roger O’Dell, 1969 Ford Bronco, with $117 raised.

Third place: Ricky Bullock, Harley Davidson Livewire, with $97 raised.

Car show “votes” alone raised nearly $900. In addition to the silent auction and food truck proceeds, ISED also sold T-shirts to raise money during ORNL Gives.

The car show was part of ORNL Gives, the lab’s largest philanthropy program, which lets employees in each directorate choose the organizations they want to support, plan fundraisers, and compete as teams for additional funds through challenges with other directorates.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit energy.gov/science.
