ORNL engineer elected to environmental engineering academy

Eric Mulkey, a research staff member in the Office of Environmental Compliance of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been elected a diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.

Mulkey was recognized for his knowledge and experience in the field of water supply and wastewater engineering. Diplomates must be registered professional engineers specializing in environmental engineering and have at least 11 years of engineering experience since obtaining their professional engineering license.

The academy is sponsored by 12 national societies and associations involved in environmental engineering. The sponsoring organizations include the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers and the Water Environment Federation.

Mulkey has been employed at ORNL since 1990. He was previously an engineer for 12 years with the Tennessee Valley Authority, where his last position was site environmental manager at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor of science degree in natural sciences, Mulkey earned his master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Delaware in 1978. He has been a registered professional engineer in Tennessee since 1983.

Mulkey is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, Water Environment Federation and the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. In 1984, he earned the National Public Relations Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) for his work on publicity for Engineers Week. Mulkey was president of the Chattanooga Chapter of NSPE in 1989 and a state director of the organization in 1990. He was named a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1994.

Mulkey serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as an advisor to the commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. He has participated in more than 70 triathlons. He most recently completed the Ironman Triathlon near Orlando, Fla.

Mulkey resides in West Knoxville.
