ORNL sponsoring two summer science camps

The Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will again sponsor two camps for elementary and middle school students this summer.

The one-week camps offered will be Science Explorers, scheduled during the weeks of June 7 and June 14, and SciCops, scheduled for the week of July 5.

Science Explorers, designed for students who have completed the fourth, fifth or sixth grade, focuses on a variety of science topics approached via field explorations and hands-on activities. Campers learn about insects, habitats, water, life, science, weather, rockets, geology, astronauts and robots. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Freels Bend Cabin in Oak Ridge.

SciCops is for students who have completed the sixth, seventh or eighth grade. It focuses on investigations in science, technology and law enforcement. Campers learn about how science and technology are used in police investigations through the Knox County Sheriff's Department, ORNL and the Center for Science and Technology for Law Enforcement at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. Campers work with fingerprinting techniques, radar, evidence analysis, scuba diving, arson investigation, forensic science, video enhancement, DNA analysis and the K-9 team. Sessions are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Knox County Sheriff's Department Training Facility in Knoxville.

Each camp is limited to 25 participants, and the cost is $160 per student.

Applications are available by contacting Claretta Sullivan of ORNL's Office of University and Science Education at (865) 241-3653 or via e-mail at sv2@ornl.gov.

ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
