Athena Safa Sefat, a researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been awarded the Fellowship of the Institute of Physics (IOP). The IOP is the professional society for physics in the UK and Ireland, where Sefat is internationally recognized for her “very high level of achievement in physics and an outstanding contribution to the profession.”

Sefat is a senior scientist in the Materials Science and Technology Division at ORNL. She is an ORNL Wigner Fellow (2008) and an Office of Science Early Career awardee (2010). She currently leads a DOE Basic Energy Sciences (BES) project researching quantum materials and serves as a scientific technical advisor to the BES Materials Sciences and Engineering Division. Sefat is also an American Physical Society Fellow (2016).

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy's Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. DOE’s Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit http://energy.gov/science.
