QIS profile: Joseph Wang

Joseph Wang studies quantum algorithms and quantum computing. In this role, Joseph uses the interdisciplinary nature of theoretical science to solve practical quantum computational challenges and develop methods to apply quantum computing to scientific problems at scale.

Substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as  recent increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy and other agencies, have positioned Joseph and his colleagues for rapid growth and success.

Joseph joined ORNL in 2021 and previously worked as a staff scientist for the Acxiom Corp. He earned his bachelor’s degree from National Central University in Taiwan and his doctorate in theoretical quantum condensed matter physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. His other research interests and focus areas include topological quantum computing and quantum machine learning.

In his spare time, Joseph enjoys hiking and competitive table tennis.

“It is in the journey, not the destination, where enlightenment is found," said Wang.
