Tennessee Science Bowl for high school-aged students Feb. 25

Registration has opened for high school-aged teams to enter the 2006 Tennessee Science Bowl scheduled Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Blount County Pellissippi State campus.

Science Bowl coordinator Marie Westfall of Oak Ridge Associated Universities says the Science Bowl is open to high school students, home schoolers, scouts and other youth organizations.

"It's a team competition," Westfall says. "Each school fields a team of four and teams compete against each other. The winning team will win an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Science Bowl."

Westfall says the Science Bowl gives students an opportunity to pursue science and math-related activities that could help develop career goals.

"It's an opportunity to encourage students to excel in math and science, to provide a fun and friendly competition," Westfall says.

Adult volunteers are needed to assist with judging and other Science Bowl tasks. Information about the Science Bowl is available at www.orau.gov/sciencebowl

Team registration deadline is Jan. 20.

Tennessee Science Bowl sponsors are the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Oak Ridge Institute of Science Education, Pellissippi State and the Knoxville News Sentinel.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
