Wooten, the project administrator of educational technology outreach programs in the Office of Science Education, will teach a new course focusing on introducing networking technologies into K-12 classrooms.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Wooten joined ORNL as a research analyst in Computing and Telecommunication Services in 1974. He subsequently served as a manager of the Fusion Energy Division's user service center, as head planner of the Office of Scientific and Technical Computing, and as head of the advanced computing research and development group.
In 1976, his work at ORNL was interrupted by a one-year appointment in Vienna, Austria, to direct the efforts of a multinational team in the design of the Safeguard Information System for the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Wooten received his bachelor's degree with a double major in physics and mathematics from Florida State University and earned his master's degree in physics from the University of South Florida. He was awarded a doctoral degree in physics from the University of Nebraska.
Wooten is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society.
He and his wife, Dianne, live in Oak Ridge. They have two children, Rachel and Mary. Wooten has three grown children, Aaron, Cheryl and Deborah.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory, one of the Department of Energy's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, a Lockheed Martin company, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
