The time-averaged information from a 10-million-cell multiphase
computational fluid dynamic simulation of a coal gasifier was used as the inlet boundary
condition for fine grid simulations of the region near the coal inlet. The simulation results
show a distinct coal jet region, characterized by high void fraction and low solids
temperature. The jets from right and left inlets have different behaviors caused by the
asymmetry in the inlet to the gasifier. The medium grid resolution with a high order
discretization scheme offers better jet resolution at lower computational cost than a fine
grid with a low order discretization scheme.
