In this chapter, we explore the research done by the de Bettencourt-Dias group in luminescent lanthanide complexes. The group has isolated ligands that sensitize the luminescence of lanthanide ions, and that bear additional functional groups that impart unique properties to the resulting complexes, such as the ability to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen, or report on, through changes in emission intensity, viscosity or temperature at the nanoscale. The energy transfer processes are accessed through one-photon excitation or two-photon excitation through the ligand, as well as upconversion. Moreover, the group explored unique coordination chemistry of lanthanides, taking advantage of secondary interactions to isolate outer-sphere complexes of these ions.
