We report the design of a versatile strain cell for small angle neutron scattering (SANS) unique in its ability
to select the application of either or tensile compressive strain in-situ. Strain is applied to the sample via
two independently actuated copper pressure transducers that can each apply a mechanical force of 270 N
onto the sample using helium gas pressure. The strain cell is optimized for magnetic SANS on modulated
long-period magnetic structures, and is therefore compact enough to t in common sample environments,
such as low-temperature cryostats and superconducting magnets. In this report we have successfully utilized
the described strain cell to investigate the response of the skyrmion lattice in MnSi.
