Electron beams sculpt plasmons with atomic precision

Scientists demonstrated the possibility of atomic-scale tailoring of nanophotonic properties of nanomaterials with electron beam. The ability to tailor nanophotonic properties with atomic precision enables the control of specific plasmon excitations, their location, and their energy that can be applicable for advancing science and technology of quantum computing, optics, and catalysis.

The STEM electron beam is used to transform the geometry and electronic response of doped indium oxide nanoparticles with chemical selectivity and atomic precision via an automated control platform. Sculpting materials by electron beams with electron energy loss spectroscopy feedback enables tailoring nanophotonic properties of complex materials and allows mapping of the structure-property relationships.   DOI: 10.1002/smll.202105099
