Research Highlight

A FLiNaK mixture of salt was circulated for the first time in the Liquid Salt Test Loop (LSTL)

This work is part of the ORNL-Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor CRADA. Researchers focused on developing design guidance for future salt pumps. They used the existing salt loop pump as a case study.   A final report that documented the work outlined several significant accomplishments:
  • Loop operations conducted at ~ 650ÂșC salt temperature
  • Pump operation at high temperature
  • Demonstrated capability of transferring salt from storage tank to loop and back and controlling salt level
  • Induction power supply operation to heat pebbles
