The ORNL DAAC project is embarking on two new advances partnering with NASA

NASA has planned an airborne campaign called the Atmospheric Carbon and Transport-America (ACT-America) to measure how weather systems and other atmospheric flows contribute to the transport of carbon dioxide and methane through the atmosphere.  This will be accomplished by multiple flight campaigns over the next five years by two aircraft which will be flown over the eastern half of the United States detecting carbon in the atmosphere.

ORNL staff members are involved in data support for the active phase of the ACT-America campaign. In addition, ORNL DAAC project has now been funded to provide active long-term data support for this mission. The ORNL DAAC will receive ~31 airborne and ground-based data products collected as part of the ACT-America campaign. ORNL DAAC’s role will be in archive, distribution, and the creation of additional data services for this campaign.

The ACT America teams consist of scientists from Pennsylvania State University, NASA, Colorado State, NOAA, Harris Corporation, the University of Oklahoma, Carnegie Institute of Science and ORNL.

The ORNL DAAC will also develop a Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) subsetting and visualization interface based on the award winning ORNL DAAC MODIS subsetting tool suite. VIIRS is a sensor on board the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite. The ORNL DAAC has setup data tools to provide quick access/analytics for the “large” datasets observed from satellites. The development of the VIIRS subsetting interface will allow for the creation of a multi-platform subsetting interface and provide the capability to create long-term data records of satellite observations for field sites, combining MODIS and VIIRS subsets.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC) for biogeochemical dynamics is one of the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) data centers managed by the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project, which is responsible for providing scientific and other users access to data from NASA's Earth Science Missions. ORNL DAAC is operated by the ORNL Environmental Sciences Division and is responsible for data archival, product development and distribution, and user support for biogeochemical and ecological data and models.
