Associate Staff Member

Jonathan Chappell is an Irradiation Engineer with the Irradiation Engineering Group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He joined the lab in October 2021. His primary role is to serve as a task lead for design, fabrication, and approval of irradiation experiments being performed at the High Flux Isotope Reactor. He has experience in materials testing, structural analysis calculations (including fatigue, bolted joints, and welds), and finite element analysis (FEA), including models with structural, thermal, and vibrational loading, as well as material nonlinearity. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering (2015) and an MS in Mechanical Engineering (2019) from Tennessee Technological University with research involving mechanical testing, characterization, and finite element modeling of electronic components and solder joints exposed to thermal cycling down to cryogenic temperatures.
