Research Associate in Data Science

Karlyn Harrod joined ORNL in 2022 as a Research Associate in Data Science within the Remote Sensing Group of the Geospatial Sciences and Human Security Division of the National Security Sciences Directorate.  Her primary research interests are in applying machine learning and statistical techniques to further understandings of the impact between climate and diseases.  Karlyn was recently awarded as the Early Career Competition LDRD recipient for the National Security Sciences Directorate for FY24.  As a part of this award, she will be leading a project furthering the current awareness of ongoing and emerging diseases with the potential to accelerate current disease research by creating a toolkit capable of learning and extracting information from large corpuses of textual reports.  

During Karlyn's graduate career, she held a PhD Internship at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.   She also held both Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships in multiple statistics courses at the University of Notre Dame in addition to having the opportunity to be the instructor for two statistics courses.  During Karlyn's undergraduate career, Karlyn worked as a Statistics Tutor for the University of St. Thomas and also worked in the Disability Services Office assisting visually impaired and blind students through their mathematics courses.  In addition, Karlyn spent two summers as an undergraduate SULI intern at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory.

Karlyn has served on the SC Conference planning committee  yearly since 2020 holding various chaired positions: Lead Student Volunteer Chair, SCALE Co-Chair, Student Volunteer Chair, and Reproducibility Logistics Lead.  Currently, she is serving as the Wayfinding Chair for SC24.  In the past year, she also Co-Chaired the Student Program for the IEEE Cluster '23 Computing Conference.  

Karlyn is passionate about mentoring and has had the opportunity to serve as a mentor to many students in programs such as SIAM's CSE Broader Engagement Program, SC's Mentor-Protege Program, and an NSF Funded StemMentorship Program at the University of Notre Dame.  Finally, Karlyn serves as a reviewer for the journal of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems.  She has also served as a reviewer for various areas within the SC Conference's Students@SC Program. 

Karlyn's dedication to service does not stop when she returns home, but continues within her neighborhood community.  Karlyn serves as the Historic Zoning Commission Neighborhood Liaison for the Old Mechanicsville Historic Overlay and is an active member of the Old Mechanicsville Neighborhood Interest Group. 

Karlyn is a member of IEEE, ACM, SIGHPC, AGU, AWIS, and SIAM.  In addition, she is an active member of the GEO Health Community of Practice.  At ORNL, Karlyn is also a member if the Women's Alliance Council (WAC) and the WINGS sub-group in addition to being a member of the Future Leaders Network.
