Maria Patrou

Research Software Engineer

Dr. Maria Patrou joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 2023 and is currently a Research Software Engineer in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, CSMD. Dr. Patrou has a strong research background and interests in "energy efficient" computing systems, programming systems and runtimes, parallel algorithms, novel hardware co-design, and large-scale data systems.

Dr. Patrou obtained her Ph.D. (2022) and Master's (2017) in Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick in Canada. She obtained her Bachelor's (2012) in Informatics and Telecommunications from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

During her Ph.D. she conducted an empirical study on Node.js modules that enable parallelism to investigate their characteristics and functionality, considering system variances. Additionally, she investigated the energy consumption and runtime performance of web requests based on the CPU frequency impact on them with the CPU Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling technique (DVFS), and implemented a CPU frequency scaling policy for Node.js web applications and provided energy-runtime-electricity cost analysis.

During her Master's, she built NumaVM, a design for node-isolated memory organization and, thread affinity policy utilizing different thread and hardware characteristics in IBM’s JVM for Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) systems. Finally, she built DISTIL, a distributed in-memory spatio-temporal data processing system for location-based services in X-10.

Dr. Patrou serves as a technical committee in conferences such as CASCON and ICPP , subcommittee chair (US-RSE) and as a mentor in our internship programs.  She is also a member of IEEE.
