Director, HFIR Upgrades Project Office

Rob Dimeo is the Director of the HFIR Upgrades Project Office. This office is responsible for planning and executing upgrades to enable long-term operations of the High Flux Isotope Reactor – a critical national asset – as well as the establishment of new scientific capabilities.

Prior to joining ORNL, Rob worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 1999, serving as the Director for the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) for the last 14 years during a time of significant expansion of the facility’s cold neutron capacity and enhancement of its neutron measurement capabilities. As NCNR Director, he was also the licensee for the NIST 20 MW research reactor, and the senior executive representing NIST in reactor-related regulatory matters. In addition, Rob was detailed to the White House as the Assistant Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering at the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) from 2005 to 2007. At OSTP, Rob worked on policy matters involving major research facilities in materials science, interagency cooperation on large-scale research activities, and was involved in several interagency working groups on major research infrastructure.

Rob has a Ph. D. in Physics and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State. His research interests include the dynamics of quantum fluids and molecular solids using neutron spectroscopy. His professional interests include operations, development, and strategic planning for major user facilities.
