Bio
Dr. Shayan Monadjemi joined the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 2023 as a visual analytics research scientist. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis (2023) where he was a member of the Visual Interface and Behavior Exploration (VIBE) Lab. Furthermore, he received a B.S. in Computer Science with honors and a minor in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Dallas (2018). Prior to joining ORNL and while in graduate school, he was a pathways intern in the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center where he investigated intelligent tools for detection and analysis of anomalies in air traffic data.
Dr. Monadjemi’s research is on the intersection of human-computer interaction, data visualization, and artificial intelligence. He investigates visual analytic techniques that foster a human-AI collaboration for data analysis and decision making under uncertainty. For instance, his work has leverages Bayesian optimization techniques (e.g., active search) to accelerate visual data exploration and Bayesian model selection to uncover users’ analytic objectives. Currently, Dr. Monadjemi’s research is on mixed-initiative visual analytic systems targeted towards domain experts such as material scientists, intelligence analysts, and medical professionals. He investigates how factors such as trust, engagement, and explainability may impact the adoption of emerging intelligent user interfaces by domain experts.
