Volker S Urban

Section Head, Large Scale Structures

Dr. Volker Urban received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Muenster, Germany in 1995. Prior to joining ORNL in 2002 as lead instrument scientist for the HFIR Bio-SANS beamline CG-3, he was an instrument scientist at the  European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and postdoctoral research associate at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source at Argonne National Laboratory and Robert Bosch GmbH. He led the Energy and Environment Group from 2012 to 2017 and the Large Scale Structures Group from 2019 to 2020, before taking his current Section Head position.  His recent scientific research has been in the fields of synthetic and biopolymers and complex fluids; in particular in understanding the relationship between the physicochemical properties of structure and dynamics and corresponding functionality in soft materials and biological systems.
