William J Turner

Lead Instrument Designer

Bill oversees the Instrument Systems Design Services Office for the Second Target Station (STS) of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). He started his career as a welder/fabricator in small shops performing a wide range of custom work, and eventually became a weld crew leader for the emergency vehicle manufacturer E-One. After completing a liberal arts AA program at the Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Florida and teaching himself to use the CAD system Prime Medusa, he joined the engineering staff at E-One as a mechanical designer. He went on to perform design work for General Dynamics and John Deere after that.

Bill joined the SNS program as a mechanical designer tasked with designing the mercury loop and other utilities at the First Target Station (FTS) in 2002. After work on the target was completed, he moved into the Instrument Group at FTS. He served as the lead designer for VULCAN and CORELLI before taking on the lead design role for two major upgrades of POWGEN and SNAP. In 2019 he became the lead designer for VENUS, which he left behind in early 2020 to join the Instrument Systems Group at STS where he has assumed the role of Lead Instrument Designer.
