ORNL has developed a revolutionary system for wirelessly transferring power to electric vehicles and energy storage systems, enabling efficient, contactless charging.

This technology encompasses a method and system for wirelessly or conductively providing AC or DC power across various applications, including electric vehicle charging and bidirectional applications for energy storage systems. It utilizes a combination of wireless power transfer (WPT) and bidirectional converter technologies to facilitate efficient energy exchange between a power source and a load, such as an electric vehicle or an energy storage system, without the need for physical connectors.

Benefits

  • Eliminates the need for physical electrical connections, reducing wear and maintenance.
  • Enables efficient transfer of power in both directions, supporting energy storage and retrieval.
  • Supports a wide range of applications from electric vehicle charging to grid energy storage.
  • Improves safety by reducing the risks associated with electrical contacts and connections.
  • Facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources with energy storage systems.

Applications and Industries

  • Electric vehicle wireless charging stations.
  • Residential and commercial energy storage systems.
  • Mobile energy storage solutions for emergency power supply and grid support.
  • Renewable energy integration with grid and off-grid applications.
  • Industrial applications requiring flexible and efficient energy transfer solutions.
