Ionic liquids comprising quaternary ammonium and phosphonium cations have been developed as eco-friendly lubricant additives. These additives are tailored for use in environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) like polyalkylene glycols, vegetable oils, and synthetic esters. They offer significant enhancements in friction reduction, wear resistance, and corrosion inhibition in mechanical systems.

Description

This technology involves a specific composition of ionic liquids that includes quaternary ammonium or phosphonium cations bonded to phosphorus-containing or carboxylate anions. The lubricant compositions that utilize these ionic liquids can be dissolved in various EALs, improving their lubricity and environmental impact. The structural design of the ionic liquids ensures compatibility with base lubricants and enhances the physical properties of the lubricants, such as reducing wear and friction in mechanical components like bearings, pistons, and turbines. The synthesis process involves conventional techniques where the ionic compounds are blended with base lubricants to achieve the desired concentration, typically ranging from 0.1% to 5% by weight.

Benefits

  • Reduced environmental impact: Non-toxic and biodegradable, minimizing ecological damage.
  • Enhanced lubricant performance: Improved anti-wear and anti-friction properties extend machinery life and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Corrosion inhibition: Effective in protecting metal surfaces against corrosion, enhancing the longevity of mechanical components.
  • Compatibility: Suitable for use with a variety of environmentally acceptable base lubricants, ensuring wide applicability.

Applications and Industries

  • Automotive industry: Used in engine and transmission fluids.
  • Industrial machinery: Applicable in hydraulic systems, compressors, and other heavy machinery.
  • Renewable energy: Useful in lubricating wind turbines and other renewable energy installations.
  • Maritime and aviation: Potential applications in lubricating systems within marine vessels and aircraft due to their low environmental impact and high performance.
