The solution proposed here is a modified carbon-based tile face that is mechanically combined with an insulative backing. The tile face is based on a material architecture to minimize weight and thermal conductivity while maximizing thermal stability. To increase the resistance of the material to oxidative and harsh chemical environments, the material will be modified. Furthermore, the use of advanced manufacturing techniques will allow for the rapid production of a wide range of tile face geometries, an important consideration for vehicles which often include many unique tile geometries.
