Additive Manufacture of In-situ Steel-Copper Alloy for Improved Tooling Performance

Invention Reference Number

202305526

Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the incremental buildup of monolithic components with a variety of materials, and material deposition locations. Previous art has shown that it is possible to deposit copper on steel, deposit copper on steel with an interlayer of a transition material, and coatings of copper; however, there is no work controlling the alloy ratios of a mixture of copper and steels for the purpose of improved tool thermal performance and ease of deposition. By directly depositing the copper and steel, the mixture ratio can be controlled. The mix ratio of copper to steel can be tailored within a tool.
