Chief Audit Executive Director Internal Audit

Fred Pieper, who has served as a chief audit executive for 14 years, leads the Internal Audit Directorate, which is responsible for all audit activities and the Employee Concerns Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The organization provides independent, objective assurance and consulting services to improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal control, and governance processes through evaluations of ORNL management systems, processes, and programs. The organization also provides an anonymous and confidential avenue for staff to raise concerns and oversees the investigation of those concerns.

Pieper previously served as director of Internal Audit and the Employee Concerns program for Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC, at Idaho National Laboratory. Within this position, he directed all strategic, operational, compliance, and financial aspects of the internal and subcontract audit functions and managed investigative activities related to employee concerns. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Inspector General for 18 years, serving as the director of the Energy, Science, and Environmental Audits Division. Pieper is a certified public accountant and certified internal auditor. He earned a B.S. in accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
