Human Dynamics

By revealing where and how human populations live across the globe, geodata technology sheds light on potential conflicts or crises related to political instabilities, natural disasters, resource shortages, health, and other factors that can impact human safety and national security.
The expansion of high-resolution satellite imagery and detailed spatial datasets has made it possible in recent years to model population distributions at a much higher level of spatial detail. At the forefront of this geodata revolution, Oak Ridge National Laboratory is advancing how stakeholders prepare for emergencies and provide much-needed services to remote or rapidly changing populations. With human data and dynamics at the core of their research, scientists in the Human Dynamics Group are developing applications in six core areas:
- Population modeling
- Urban environments
- Demography
- Energy and transportation
- Mobility
- Trends and patterns in global and local human dynamics
