Dr. Arvid E. Pasto of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been named director of the High Temperature Materials Laboratory (HTML) in ORNL's Metals and Ceramics Division.
As director, Pasto is responsible for management of the HTML User Program, which provides American university and industrial engineers and scientists access to the HTML's specialized materials characterization equipment. Pasto is also manager of the HTML Fellowship Program, which seeks to increase the number of highly qualified materials scientists and engineers in the U.S. through long- term residencies at the HTML. Graduate, post-graduate, faculty, and industrial fellowships are provided, with terms of months to years.
Pasto rejoined the division in 1991 after serving as a development engineer and project leader at ORNL from 1972 to 1980. Since 1991, he has served as research associate, group leader, and section manager. He previously spent 11 years with GTE Laboratories, Inc., in Waltham, Mass.
Pasto holds a bachelor's degree in ceramic science, and master's and doctorate degrees in ceramics from the State University of New York College of Ceramics at Alfred (N.Y.) University.
Pasto is a 30-year member of the American Ceramic Society, from which he recently received the F. H. Norton Award for distinguished work in the field of ceramics and service to the local Ceramic Society section. He is the author of more than 30 publications and has been granted three patents.
He and his wife, Elaine, live in Farragut and have two children.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is one of the Department of Energy's multiprogram national research and development facilities. It is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
