The division is a merger of the Biology and Health Sciences Research divisions and took effect Feb. 1, 1997. Reinhold Mann, formerly with the Computer Science and Mathematics Division, has been appointed director. Barry Berven and Paul Rohwer of the Health Sciences Research Division will be associate directors. Fred Hartman, a Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp. corporate fellow, who served concurrently as director of the Biology Division and lead scientist of its acclaimed Protein Engineering program during the past nine years, will devote full-time to the latter.
"This action reflects ORNL's strong commitment to an important area of scientific competency at the Laboratory, evidenced by a long tradition of scientific excellence and innovation," said David Reichle, ORNL's associate director for life sciences and environmental technologies. "This reorganization will permit more effective operations, integrate our scientific capabilities and resources and facilitate our responsiveness to new programmatic opportunities."
Mann came to ORNL in 1981 as a visiting scientist before joining the ORNL Biology Division staff in 1983. He earned his master's degree in mathematics and a doctorate in physics from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
Berven has been director of the Health Sciences Research Division since 1993. He earned a bachelor of science degree in biology, a master's and doctorate in radiation biology from Colorado State University.
Rohwer has been the associate director of the Health Sciences Research Division since 1993. He earned his bachelor of science degree in physics from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and his master's and doctorate in radiation biology from the University of Rochester.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
