The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has awarded a $2.4 million construction contract for land improvements to the SNS linear accelerator (linac) complex. This work will complete all final erosion control and grading over the linac tunnel to areas adjacent to the front end, linac, and ring. The linac will deliver a high-energy proton beam to the SNS target facility where scientific research will be conducted.
The contract was awarded to GEM Technologies Inc. of Knoxville. Work is expected to begin in December 2002 and will be completed in about six months.
Construction management for SNS is performed by Knight/Jacobs Joint Venture.
When completed in 2006, SNS will become the world's leading research facility for study of the structure and dynamics of materials using neutrons. It will operate as a user facility that will enable researchers from the United States and abroad to study the science of materials that forms the basis for new technologies in telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation, information technology, biotechnology, and health.
